Tips and tricks for the current students in Mainz

Due to the Covid crisis, it might look difficult for the students freshly arrived in Mainz to discover and enjoy this city, which is known for its cultural, student and nightlife. However, we believe that this wonderful city and its gorgeous region still have many things to offer and we would like to share with you some tips on how to make the best out of this semester in Mainz.

First of all, you should do a round of the city center from the main station walk along the Bahnhofstrasse to the Münsterplatz and then further to the Schillerplatz where you can admire the carnival fountain, the French institute, a statue of the great poet Schiller and a colorful flowerbed. Turn left and get to the cathedral. Next to the cathedral you will find the Market, each Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.). There, you will find a lot of specialties from the region and abroad. After your groceries, you can have a walk along the Rhine and, if it’s open, buy ice cream at the N’Eis shop that is supposed to be the best in Germany.

There are other nice places to visit in Mainz: the Stadtpark and its Flamingos, the palace of the elective princes, the St Stephan church and its Chagall-stained glass windows.

But Mainz is, of course, not the only city you should visit: Wiesbaden, just across the Rhine river, is a really pretty city with some green areas, really nice “art deco’ buildings, a casino and many beautiful churches.

Frankfurt, a bit further away, is the “Manhattan” of Germany (or even Europe) with its many skyscrapers but also some nice parks and promenades along the Main river.

If you like smaller cities or typical villages, there are many next to Mainz: Oppenheim, Nierstein, Eltville will make you travel back in time and appreciate the charms of the Rhine valley, its many vineyards and amazing landscapes.
